Office Policies

Therapy is a significant investment, emotionally as well as financially, but one that offers potentially life changing rewards. I’m happy to answer any questions about therapy, or my office policies. It’s important to me that you feel you’re in the right place.

Sessions are 50 minutes, and I generally see people on a weekly basis. Because of the nature of the process, therapy is most effective if we are able to meet consistently. For couples I like to schedule a longer initial appointment to enable a more accurate and useful assessment.

My fee is $190 per 50 minute session, though in some instances I can make adjustments to that. Unless other arrangements are made, I request payment at the time of service.

Phone and Email Contact

I check my phone messages throughout the day, but may not always respond to email on a daily basis. For any issue that is time sensitive, such as a cancellation or wanting a return call, please leave a phone message.

My office phone is 510-548-4950, and I may be reached through email at

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours prior to your appointment are charged at the full rate of the session.

I am not on any insurance panels, though I can write an invoice for you to submit to your insurance company. Likely, the amount of reimbursement will be less for an out-of-network provider. This issue does not affect Health Savings Accounts (HSA), for which I can also provide required statements.

Trust in therapy depends partly on knowing you have a space to talk freely about the full range of your concerns, fantasies, impulses and desires.

There are, however, some legally mandated and ethically warranted exceptions to confidentiality. Primary among these are child abuse or neglect (including sex with a minor, if you are over 18), elder or dependent adult abuse, a court order, or someone presenting a serious threat of suicidal intent, or a serious threat of harm against another person(s) or their property.

Also, in my work with couples, I have a “no secrets” policy. I’ll bring into our sessions any significant information revealed to me privately by one partner. Otherwise, the same parameters of confidentiality apply as with individual work.
